Interphase:

-longest stage
-Divided into three phases:
Growth and Preparation: Cell grows
Replication: DNA copies itself, makes a “replica," Ensures new cells are identical
Continued Growth and Preparation: Cell continues to grow, makes materials (proteins) for new cells formed during cytokinesis (daughter cells)

Front image:

Mitosis- Prophase:

-the duplicated chromosomes form into an X shape and the nucleolus disappears.
-Spindle fibers begin to form (tiny tube-like structures made of protein)

Front image:

Mitosis- Metaphase:

-Tugging of spindle fibers line up duplicated chromosomes across the middle of the cell

Front image:

Mitosis- Anaphase:

-spindle fibers shorten, contract
-pulls centromere apart, sister chromatids move to opposite ends of cell
-now each is a chromosome

Front image:

Mitosis- Telophase:

-spindle fibers begin to disappear, nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes
-nucleolus appears in each nucleus
-2 nuclei in one cell = READY TO DIVIDE!

Front image:

Cytokinesis:

-final stage, separates two nuclei into two daughter cells, identical to parent
-Animal: cell membrane pinches together, divides cell’s cytoplasm, organelles
-Plant: cell plate forms along the center, divides into two daughter cells.
