Synovial Joints
(freely movable)
-Synovial (diarthrosis) joints are the most common type of joint and allow free movement.
Cartilaginous Joints
(Semi moveable)
-Cartilagnous (amphiarthrosis) joints occur where tissue joins the bone limiting movements.
Fibrous Joints
(no movement)
-Fibrous (synarthrosis) joints have dense connective tissue binding bones together allowing no movement
Synovial Joint Include:
Most of the joints in the body.
1.Joint capsule
2. Joint Cavity
3. Articular Cartilage
4. Synovial Membrane= Which lines the capsule in synovial fluid.
Two types of Synovial Joints: Hinge & Pivot
(Uniaxial)
-These joints moves in one direction.
1. Hinge: Flexion and Extension
Example: Elbow, Knee , Finger
2. Pivot: Rotation on an axis
Example: Joint Atlas and Axis
Head moving side to side "NO movement"
Two types of Cartilaginous Joints: 1. Synchondrosis
(biaxial)
-Contains bones connected by Hyaline Cartilage
1. Synchondrosis: Hyaline Cartilage joins the ribs to the sternum.
ex: This allows for some movement during breathing
Two types of Cartilaginous Joints: 2. Symphyses
(biaxial)
-Contains bones connected by Fibrocartilage
2. Symphyses: Associated with the midline of the body and found in 2 locations.
ex: location 1: Pubic symphysis: fibrocartilage found between the 2 pubic bones
location 2: Intervertebral Discs
Three types of Fibrous Joints: 1. Sutures
-Have dense fibrous tissue that grows between bones.
Suture: Found between the the skull bones.
1. serrate sutures
2. squamos suture
3. plane suture
Three types of Fibrous Joints: 2. Gomphoses
Gomphoses: found at the roots of teeth and include fibrous tissue connected to the teeth sockets.
Three types of Fibrous Joints 3. Syndesmoses
Syndesmoses: Have connected tissues that forms between two bones. (Interosseus Membrane)
example: Distal ends of the radius and ulna
tibia and fibula
