For example, “rosewood” paneling may consist of a thin veneer of natural rosewood glued on top of a sheet of common plywood or fiberboard. Standard sizing is 4'x8'

Why do builders use veneered wood paneling often?

1) Less expensive since only a sliver of wood needs to be used in material

Alkyd paint is an oil based paint which is more durable and easy to clean, however it emits VOCs, requires los of coats for opaque finish, wall must be perfectly prepared beforehand, hard to find since many municipalities have banned them, and they yellow over time. Latex paint is a water-based paint that is easier to use, can be applied to less cured sheetrock, fewer coats needed and quick drying, less expensive, less-hazardous option. Disadvantages: Cannot adhere to non-porous surfaces, the finish is not quite as rich and luxurious as oil based paint.

What are four special effects used with paint?

1) Glazing: The final coat is a clear varnish for high-sheen "wet look"
2) Dragging: Consists of uneven vertical lines. Not recommended for highly textured walls
3) Sponging: A large, natural sponge is used to dab a glaze onto a dry base coat.
4) Marbling: Several glazes are used to obtain the look of marble, its colorations and the veins that run through it. Expensive and an expert is recommended
